The water inlet valve in your Hotpoint dishwasher is a small electrical solenoid valve. When electrical current is supplied, it opens to allow water to flow into the dishwasher. While some valves may be more complex, the basic principle is to allow water in as needed.

These valves are usually easy to test for electrical failure using a multimeter. Simply check if they are either open or closed circuits. If they are open circuits, the water valve is faulty.
