Description
The door lock and interlock switch is the safety device that keeps the washing machine door securely closed throughout every stage of the wash cycle.
It is a Metaflex ITW ZV-447 type door lock, a bi-metal interlock mechanism that both latches the door mechanically and completes the electrical circuit that tells the control board the door is safely shut. Until the lock engages and signals the board, the machine will not fill, tumble or spin, which is why a failed door lock so often presents as a machine that appears to be completely dead despite having power.
The lock also prevents the door from being opened while the drum is turning or the water level is above the safe threshold, and it includes a delay mechanism that keeps the door locked for a short period after the cycle ends to allow the drum to stop and any residual heat or water to settle.
Door locks fail in several recognisable ways. The most common is a lock that no longer latches, so the door springs open or feels loose when pushed shut, and the machine refuses to start. In other cases, the lock engages mechanically but the internal contacts no longer close, so the control board never receives the confirmation signal and the cycle will not begin. The bi-metal strip inside the lock can also fatigue, causing the lock to release too early, mid-cycle, or to remain locked after the programme has finished, trapping the laundry inside. A lock that is stuck closed may need to be forced open, which can damage the door handle or the lock itself.
Because the ZV-447 type lock is used across a wide range of brands and models, and because several visually similar locks exist with different terminal arrangements and pin configurations, confirm your full model number before ordering. Diagnostic tip: Isolate the power before testing. With the door lock removed and the leads disconnected, examine the lock for signs of burning, arcing or a melted housing, which indicates the contacts have been overloaded. Test the lock mechanism by hand: the latch should move smoothly and return positively under spring tension. A lock that feels stiff, gritty or does not return freely is worn and should be replaced. If the lock appears mechanically sound but the machine will not start, check the wiring and terminals for looseness or corrosion before ordering. If the machine displays a door-related error code, this lock is the most likely cause on the models listed.
Installation guide: 1. Switch off and unplug the washing machine, or isolate the dedicated circuit at the consumer unit. 2. Turn off the water supply and, where possible, run a drain cycle to empty the drum. 3. Open the door and locate the door lock, which is usually mounted on the inner side of the door frame opposite the hinges. 4. Remove the retaining screws or clips that secure the lock, supporting it so it does not fall. 5. Pull the lock forward and disconnect the spade terminals, noting which wire goes to which terminal. 6. Remove the old lock and compare it with the new one to confirm the terminal positions and mounting points match. 7. Connect the leads to the new lock in the original positions and push the terminals fully home. 8. Fit the new lock into its mounting and secure it with the retaining screws or clips, checking that the latch aligns with the door striker. 9. Close the door and listen for the lock clicking as the latch engages. 10. Restore the power and water, run a short cycle and confirm the machine starts, completes the cycle and that the door releases correctly at the end.
Safety note: Always isolate the electrical supply before working on a washing machine, as mains voltage is present at the door lock terminals. Do not bypass or bridge the door lock, as this disables a critical safety interlock and allows the drum to spin with the door open. Residual water in the drum and pump can be hot, so allow the machine to cool before disconnecting anything. If the door striker or hinge is worn or misaligned, correct it at the same time, as a poorly aligned door will quickly damage a new lock.

On Beko models, E10 indicates that the machine cannot detect the door is securely closed. The door may feel shut but the lock is not engaging or the internal contacts are not closing. This is usually caused by the door lock itself, though a water inlet, drainage or motor control board fault can produce the same code. Test the lock before checking other components.

E9 (Beko) — Door Lock Failure
E9 is displayed when the machine cannot detect that the door is closed, latched and locked properly. The cycle will not start. This is usually caused by a faulty door lock mechanism, a poor connection in the door circuit, or a failed control board. Check the lock terminals and wiring before condemning the board.

E30 (Amica) — Door Does Not Lock When Closed
On Amica models, E30 means the washing machine door does not lock when closed. The cycle will not start and the machine may beep. First check that no laundry is trapped in the door seal preventing it from closing fully. If the door closes properly but E30 persists, the lock or its wiring is at fault.

U4 (Amica) — Door Lock Failure
U4 on Amica models indicates a door lock failure. The machine has detected that the lock is not operating correctly, either failing to lock when the door is closed or failing to release at the end of the cycle. dE / dE1 / dE2 (LG) — Door Not Closing Or Locking
LG models display dE when the door is not closed completely, dE1 when the door is not closed properly, and dE2 when the door is closed but the lock mechanism is not operating correctly. On Gorenje models, E:02 indicates a door lock error. The display prompts you to make sure the washing machine door is closed. The Door Feels Loose Or Swings Open
The door does not stay securely closed — it feels loose or swings open from a closed position. This is a clear sign that the locking mechanism has failed. The machine will not start, or if it does start, water may leak from the door during the wash. The door lock should be replaced.

The Machine Appears Dead With No Response
Nothing happens when the start button is pressed — no display, no drum movement, no sound.
