Description
This compatible washing machine heating element is a direct replacement for the heater assembly used in a wide range of AEG, De Dietrich, Electrolux, John Lewis, Tricity Bendix and Zanussi washing machines. The element heats the water during the wash cycle and is typically mounted at the bottom of the outer tub. This 1800W unit operates at 230V and includes a temperature sensor to ensure accurate water temperature control for efficient stain removal and detergent activation.
Over time, heating elements can fail due to limescale build-up, which insulates the element and causes it to overheat and burn out.
Common symptoms include the machine taking a very long time to complete a cycle, the wash cycle stalling or aborting because the water never reaches the set temperature, error codes related to heating faults, or the appliance tripping the electrics when the heater activates.

Fitment guidance: This compatible heating element is designed for the AEG, De Dietrich, Electrolux, John Lewis, Tricity Bendix and Zanussi models listed below. It may also fit models not shown here. Even if an element looks similar, it may not be compatible – always verify your model number. The model number and, in some cases, the PNC (Product Number Code) or serial number, can usually be found on a rating plate on the inner door frame, behind the kickplate at the base, or on the rear panel of the appliance.
Diagnostic tip: Before replacing the element, test it with a multimeter set to the resistance (ohms) setting. Disconnect the appliance from the mains, access the element, and place the meter probes onto the element terminals. A healthy 1800W element should read approximately 25–30 ohms. A reading of OL or infinite resistance confirms the element has failed. Also check the temperature sensor – a working sensor should read between 20,000 and 50,000 ohms at room temperature. If the element tests correctly but the machine still does not heat, check the wiring and control board.
Installation guide: Always disconnect the appliance from the mains before starting any repair. Access the heating element from the rear of the machine – remove the back panel by unscrewing the screws (typically 6 x 7mm screws). Disconnect the wiring from the element terminals, noting their positions. Unscrew the 10mm nut in the centre of the element – do not remove the nut entirely, just loosen it. Carefully lever the rubber seal away from the drum using a flat pry tool, then pull the old element out. Clean the lip of the tub opening before fitting the new element. Lubricate the new seal with a little washing-up liquid, insert the element into the tub, ensuring the bracket locates correctly, and tighten the nut firmly but do not overtighten. Reconnect the wiring, refit the back panel, and run a hot cycle to check for leaks and correct heating.
