Replacement washing machine door seal – compatible with Hotpoint and Whirlpool as shown unless advised otherwise

Check your washing machine model number to ensure a guaranteed fit.

Description

A compatible replacement door seal that forms the watertight gasket between the door and the drum on compatible Hotpoint and Whirlpool washing machines.

This seal matches the original part's specifications and performance, using a silicone-based compound that resists wear, prevents deterioration, and avoids damage from skin creams or chemicals that can degrade lower-quality rubber seals. The seal sits around the door opening, held in place by retaining bands, and is designed to keep water inside the drum throughout the wash and spin cycles while cushioning the door as it closes. Fitting a matched seal ensures the door closes with the correct pressure and the drain holes align correctly with the drum.

This part will only fit the models shown or as specifically advised and will not fit any others, even if it looks the same. It probably won't, as several look alike but aren't. Please take time to ensure this is correct before ordering. If you are unsure, please contact us for assistance. This spare part is ordered on request only and is non-returnable, so please confirm the full model number before ordering.

Door seals deteriorate gradually through constant exposure to detergent, heat and mechanical stress. Common signs of failure include water pooling under the door, black mould growing in the seal's folds, a torn or stretched lip, and the door no longer closing with a firm seal. If left unreplaced, a leaking door seal can damage the floor and surrounding cabinetry, and in some cases water can reach the door lock and trigger a fault code. Replacing the seal early protects both the appliance and the kitchen. This compatible replacement matches the original part's specifications and performance.

Technical Notes

Specifications: Compatible washing machine door seal (door gasket). Material: silicone-based compound. Supplied with retaining bands where applicable. Product code: DBT171.

Safety note: Always disconnect the appliance from the mains supply before beginning any repair. Wear gloves when handling the old seal, as detergent residue can irritate the skin and the retaining band may have sharp edges. Take care when removing the wire band, as it is under tension and can spring back.

Common Faults & Symptoms

The following fault codes and symptoms are commonly reported when this part begins to fail. Use this as a diagnostic guide before ordering a replacement — if more than one of these is present, the part is the likely culprit.

1
Error Code F05 (Hotpoint / Indesit) — Drain Fault
Displayed by Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines when the appliance fails to drain within the expected time. Water may remain standing in the drum at the end of the cycle and the door will remain locked. F05 is one of the most common codes associated with a failing or blocked drain pump, but a blocked filter or kinked hose can trigger the same code, so these should be checked first. Water escaping past a failed door seal can also reach the pressure switch and cause false full readings.
2
Error Code F06 (Hotpoint / Indesit / Whirlpool) — Door Lock Fault
Hotpoint, Indesit and Whirlpool washing machines may display F06 when the door lock circuit is not functioning correctly. The door remains locked and cannot be opened. While F06 usually points to the door lock itself, water escaping past a failed door seal can reach the lock and cause it to short or fail. Check the seal for signs of leakage before replacing the lock.
3
Error Code F5 E3 (Hotpoint) — Door Lock System Fault
On Hotpoint-family machines, F5 E3 is associated with the door-lock system — the machine isn't getting the correct confirmation that the door is locked or unlocked. Water escaping past a worn door seal can short the lock mechanism, producing this code. Check the seal for damage and confirm the door closes flush before replacing the lock.
4
Error Code F9 E1 (Whirlpool) — Long Drain Time
Whirlpool washing machines may display F9 E1 when the appliance fails to drain within the expected time. The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter or blockages in the small drain holes within the door seal bellows, which can accumulate lint and debris. Check and clean the door seal drain holes before assuming the pump has failed.
5
Error Code FdL or F29 (Whirlpool) — Door Cannot Unlock
Whirlpool washing machines may display FdL or F29 when the door cannot be unlocked. Firmly press the door in the area of the lock and hold the power button for at least three seconds. If the code persists, the door lock mechanism may have failed, often as a result of water ingress past a worn door seal. Inspect the seal for damage before replacing the lock.
6
Error Code F5 E2 (Whirlpool) — Door Cannot Lock
Whirlpool front-load washers may display F5 E2 when the door cannot lock correctly. This can be caused by a misaligned door, a faulty lock mechanism, or a worn door seal that prevents the door from closing fully. Check that the seal is seated correctly and the door closes flush before replacing the lock.
7
Water Leaking From Under the Door
The most common and most obvious sign of a failing door seal. Water pools at the base of the door during the wash cycle and may run onto the floor. In most cases the leak worsens over time as the rubber lip hardens and loses its ability to seal against the door glass. Check that the drain holes at the bottom of the seal are clear before ordering a replacement.
8
Visible Cracks, Tears or Stretched Rubber
Run a finger around the inside and outside of the seal, feeling for splits, holes, or sections where the rubber has become soft and stretched. A seal that no longer springs back into shape when pressed has lost its elasticity and will not hold water reliably. Pay particular attention to the bottom of the seal, where detergent and water collect.
9
Black Mould or Mildew in the Folds
Dark staining or a musty smell coming from the seal indicates mould growth within the folds of the rubber. While light surface mould can be cleaned, deep-seated black mould often means the rubber has become porous and cannot be fully restored. Persistent mould is a common reason to replace the seal even when it is not visibly leaking.
10
Door Difficult to Close or Banging During Spin
A door seal that has swollen, warped or come away from the drum can make the door difficult to latch. During the spin cycle the door may bang or rattle because the seal no longer cushions it correctly. Check that the seal is seated properly before assuming the door hinge or lock is at fault.

Fitment Guidance

This door seal is compatible only with the Hotpoint and Whirlpool washing machine models listed in the compatibility matrix above. Even if a seal looks visually similar, the profile of the rubber lip and the position of the drain holes can differ between models, so a part that appears to fit may not seal correctly.

  • The model number is usually found on a rating plate inside the door opening, on the rear panel of the machine, or on the inner edge of the door frame.
  • For Hotpoint and Whirlpool machines, the rating plate is often located behind the detergent drawer or on the back of the appliance.
  • Compare the full model number against the compatibility list above, including any suffix after the forward slash.
  • Check that the drain holes in the new seal match the position of those on the old one.
  • If the model number is not listed, contact our parts advisors before ordering, as this is a custom order part and cannot be returned.

Diagnostic Tips

Before concluding that the door seal has failed, carry out these checks to rule out other causes. Most require only a visual inspection.

  • Visual inspection: Examine the full length of the seal in good light, inside and out, for cracks, tears, or hard, shiny patches where the rubber has perished.
  • Wipe test: Run a clean cloth around the seal and check for black residue, which indicates the rubber is breaking down.
  • Drain hole check: Locate the small drain holes at the bottom of the seal and confirm they are clear. Blocked drain holes cause water to overflow from the seal even when the rubber itself is sound.
  • Retaining band check: Confirm that the wire retaining band is intact and tight. A loose or broken band allows the seal to lift away from the drum.
  • Detergent check: Confirm you are using the correct amount and type of detergent. Excess suds can leak past a sound seal and mimic a seal failure.
  • Door alignment check: Close the door and check that it meets the seal evenly. A misaligned door hinge can cause leaks even with a new seal fitted.

Installation Guide

These steps describe the general procedure for replacing a washing machine door seal. The exact sequence varies between models, so always consult the appliance manual where available.

  1. Disconnect the appliance from the mains supply and turn off the water inlet.
  2. Open the door and, where possible, remove it by unscrewing the hinge screws. Set the door aside safely.
  3. Prise off the outer retaining band or spring clip using a flat-head screwdriver. Take care, as the band is under tension and can spring back.
  4. Pull the outer edge of the seal away from the front panel and fold it back to expose the inner retaining band around the drum.
  5. Remove the inner retaining band by releasing the tensioning spring, then pull the old seal away from the drum opening.
  6. Clean the drum lip and the door opening thoroughly, removing any detergent residue or limescale.
  7. Fit the inner lip of the new seal over the drum opening, aligning the drain holes with the bottom of the drum.
  8. Refit the inner retaining band and tension it so the seal sits firmly against the drum.
  9. Fold the outer edge of the seal over the front panel and refit the outer retaining band or spring clip.
  10. Refit the door if it was removed.
  11. Restore the mains supply and run a short rinse cycle with no laundry to confirm there are no leaks.

Before Ordering, Check These First

  • Verify your full model number against the compatibility list above, including any suffix after the forward slash.
  • Check that the drain holes at the bottom of your existing seal are clear, as blockages can mimic a seal failure.
  • Confirm that the retaining bands are intact and tight before ordering a replacement.
  • Inspect the door hinge and lock for damage, as misalignment can cause leaks even with a new seal.
  • Rule out over-sudsing from too much detergent before concluding the seal has failed.
  • Contact our parts advisors if any doubt remains about fitment before placing your order.

Washing Machine
Door Seals & Gaskets

Door seals, also called boot seals or gaskets, keep water in your washing machine. Faulty seals can lead to leaks, mould, or damage to internal components.

About Washing Machine Door Seals

Most modern door seals are made from a silicone-based compound rather than rubber. This resists wear, prevents deterioration, and avoids damage from skin creams or chemicals.

Low-quality seals may deform, and cheap washers can develop mould due to low water levels. Always check the make, model, and serial number to ensure a proper fit.

Hotpoint
Spare Parts.

Hotpoint remains Britain's most ubiquitous appliance brand. Following the 2005 Indesit acquisition and subsequent Whirlpool ownership, it is now part of Beko Europe. This legacy means components are shared across Hotpoint, Indesit, Ariston, and Whirlpool machines globally.

The Data Accuracy Requirement

Hotpoint production involves constant technical revisions. To guarantee fitment, we require the Full Model, Industrial Code, or Serial Number. A part that looks identical may have different terminal configurations or thermostat tolerances.
