Description

The door switch is a safety interlock that tells the tumble dryer the door is securely closed before the drum can turn.

It sits behind the door frame or striker plate and activates when the door latch pushes it as the door closes. Until the switch contacts close, the control board will not energise the motor, heater or any part of the drying cycle, which is why a failed door switch so often presents as a machine that appears completely dead.

On the models listed here, the switch also plays a critical role in stopping the drum instantly if the door is opened mid-cycle, protecting the user from the rotating drum and any residual heat. This genuine replacement is manufactured to the dryer maker's specifications, so the actuator arm, mounting clip, and terminal arrangement match the original part, and the switch seats correctly without modification.

Door switches fail in a few predictable ways. The most common is mechanical wear inside the switch body, where the internal contacts become pitted, or the actuator loses its spring tension after thousands of door openings. The result is a switch that no longer closes reliably, so the dryer either refuses to start or cuts out partway through a cycle when the door vibrates slightly. In other cases, the switch fails in the closed position, which is less obvious but equally problematic: the dryer may run with the door open or fail to stop when the door is opened during a cycle. Loose or corroded terminals at the switch can also cause intermittent operation that mimics a failing switch.

Because door switches are small, inexpensive components that are easy to overlook, they are often misdiagnosed as a faulty control board or timer, so testing the switch first can save time and money. This door switch may fit more models than shown, so if your model is not listed, please check with our team before ordering. It is only confirmed to fit the models shown or as advised and will not fit others even if they look similar.

Technical Notes

Specifications: Genuine door switch for domestic tumble dryers, supplied as a complete switch assembly with the actuator arm and mounting clip as used by the original manufacturer. The switch is a single-pole mechanical interlock device rated for mains voltage operation, with push-on spade terminals for the live and neutral connections. It is designed to engage with the door latch or striker plate and to close the circuit only when the door is fully shut. Product code: C00526571.

Fitment guidance: This door switch is confirmed for the Ariston, Bauknecht, Hotpoint, Ignis, Indesit and Whirlpool models listed below. The model number is found on the rating plate, which is usually located on the rear of the appliance, on the door frame behind the door seal, or on the inner side of the door itself. Match the complete model number, including any numbers shown in brackets. Door switches are easy to mis-order because many look identical while differing in actuator length, terminal orientation or mounting clip design, so never order on appearance alone. If your model is not listed, please confirm fitment with our team before ordering.

Diagnostic tip: Isolate the power before testing. Remove the switch from its mounting and disconnect the leads. With a multimeter set to continuity, test across the switch terminals while operating the actuator by hand: a healthy switch will show a clear on/off change as the actuator is pressed and released. If the switch shows no continuity in the closed position, or continuity in the open position, it has failed and must be replaced. Check the terminals for corrosion or looseness and inspect the actuator for wear. If the switch tests correctly but the dryer still will not start, check the door latch alignment, the wiring to the switch and the control board before assuming the switch is at fault.

Installation guide: 1. Switch off and unplug the tumble dryer, or isolate the circuit at the consumer unit. 2. Open the door and locate the door switch, which is usually mounted on the door frame behind the striker plate or on the front panel adjacent to the door latch. 3. Remove the retaining screw or clip that secures the switch, supporting it so it does not fall into the cabinet. 4. Pull the switch forward and disconnect the spade terminals, noting which wire goes to which terminal. 5. Compare the new switch with the old one to confirm the actuator and terminal positions match. 6. Connect the leads to the new switch in the original positions and push the terminals fully home. 7. Fit the switch into its mounting, refit the retaining screw or clip and check that the actuator aligns with the door latch. 8. Close the door and listen for the switch clicking as the latch engages. 9. Restore the power and run a short cycle to confirm the dryer starts and that the switch cuts the drum when the door is opened. 10. If the switch is adjustable, set it so it engages positively without the door needing to be forced shut.

Safety note: Always isolate the electrical supply before working on a tumble dryer, as mains voltage is present at the switch terminals. Allow the appliance to cool before handling the door area, as the drum and door can remain hot after use. Do not bypass or bridge the door switch, as this disables a critical safety interlock and allows the drum to run with the door open. If the door latch or striker plate is worn or misaligned, correct it at the same time, as a poorly aligned latch will quickly damage a new switch.

Common Faults & Symptoms

The following fault codes and symptoms are commonly reported when this part begins to fail. Use this as a diagnostic guide before ordering a replacement — if more than one of these is present, the part is the likely culprit.

1
F01 — Door Lock Or Door Switch Fault
On Ariston and Indesit models, F01 is commonly displayed when the control board does not receive the expected signal from the door switch after the door is closed. The dryer may start briefly and then stop, or refuse to begin a cycle at all. This is one of the most frequent codes associated with a failed door switch, and testing the switch for continuity is the first step before ordering any other component.
2
F10 — Door Open Or Door Not Detected
On Hotpoint and Whirlpool models, F10 indicates that the appliance believes the door is open even when it is shut. The drum will not turn and the cycle will not start. This can be caused by a door switch that has failed in the open position, a misaligned latch that is not pressing the actuator far enough, or a broken wire between the switch and the control board.
3
The Dryer Appears Completely Dead
Nothing happens when the start button is pressed — no drum movement, no heat, no display activity. If the machine has power at the socket and the door switch is the only interlock in the circuit, a failed switch will prevent the control board from energising any part of the dryer. Check the switch before assuming the control board or timer has failed.
4
The Drum Stops When The Door Is Slightly Moved
The dryer runs normally but cuts out as soon as the door is touched or when the drum vibrates during a cycle. This suggests the door switch contacts are worn and only making intermittent contact. The switch is not holding the circuit closed reliably, and a replacement is the only permanent fix. Check that the door catch is not loose before ordering.
5
The Dryer Runs With The Door Open
The drum continues to turn or the heater remains on after the door is opened. This is a serious safety issue and indicates that the door switch has failed in the closed position, or that someone has bypassed it. Stop using the appliance immediately, isolate the power and replace the switch. Never tape or wedge the switch closed as a temporary repair.
6
A Clicking Sound From The Door Area But No Start
A distinct click is heard when the door is closed or when the start button is pressed, but the cycle does not begin. The click may be the switch actuator moving, but the internal contacts are not closing. This is a classic sign of a worn switch mechanism, and testing the switch with a multimeter will confirm whether continuity is being made.
7
The Cycle Starts And Then Cuts Out After A Few Minutes
The dryer begins normally but stops partway through the programme, often with no error code or with a door-related code. As the drum vibrates, a marginal door switch loses contact and the control board shuts the cycle down as a safety precaution. This can also be caused by a loose connection at the switch terminals, so check the wiring before replacing the switch.
8
The Door Feels Loose Or Does Not Latch Firmly
The door closes but does not feel secure, and the dryer may require the door to be held shut to run. This points to a worn latch or striker plate that is not pressing the door switch actuator far enough. Check the latch alignment and the switch mounting before ordering, as a misaligned latch can mimic a failed switch.

Before Ordering, Check These First

  • Test the door switch for continuity in both the open and closed positions.
  • Check the wiring and spade terminals at the switch for looseness or corrosion.
  • Confirm the door latch and striker plate are aligned correctly and not worn.
  • Inspect the actuator arm on the switch for wear or damage.
  • Verify your full model number, including any numbers in brackets, against the compatibility list above.
  • If your model is not listed, contact our team to confirm fitment before ordering.
