Description

The door switch is a safety interlock that tells the tumble dryer the door is securely closed before the drum can turn.

It sits behind the door frame or striker plate and activates when the door latch pushes it as the door closes. Until the switch contacts close, the control board will not energise the motor, heater or any part of the drying cycle, which is why a failed door switch so often presents as a machine that appears completely dead.

Diagnostic tip: Isolate the power before testing. Remove the switch from its mounting and disconnect the leads. With a multimeter set to continuity, test across the switch terminals while operating the actuator by hand: a healthy switch will show a clear on/off change as the actuator is pressed and released. If the switch shows no continuity in the closed position, or continuity in the open position, it has failed and must be replaced. Check the terminals for corrosion or looseness and inspect the actuator for wear. If the switch tests correctly but the dryer still will not start, check the door latch alignment, the wiring to the switch and the control board before assuming the switch is at fault.

Installation guide: 1. Switch off and unplug the tumble dryer, or isolate the circuit at the consumer unit. 2. Open the door and locate the door switch, which is usually mounted on the door frame behind the striker plate or on the front panel adjacent to the door latch. 3. Remove the retaining screw or clip that secures the switch, supporting it so it does not fall into the cabinet. 4. Pull the switch forward and disconnect the spade terminals, noting which wire goes to which terminal. 5. Compare the new switch with the old one to confirm the actuator and terminal positions match. 6. Connect the leads to the new switch in the original positions and push the terminals fully home. 7. Close the door and listen for the switch clicking as the latch engages. 9. Restore the power and run a short cycle to confirm the dryer starts and that the switch cuts the drum when the door is opened. 10.
