Replacement carbon filter for extraction hobs – compatible with AEG and Electrolux models as shown unless advised otherwise

Check your extraction hob model number to ensure a guaranteed fit.

Description

This genuine carbon filter is identical to the original supplied with the extraction hob, restoring the odour-removal stage that keeps cooking smells out of the kitchen when the appliance is used in recirculation mode.

Helsa manufactures it to the original specification, using activated carbon held in a plastic frame that slots directly into the filter housing beneath the hob surface. The carbon traps odour molecules as they pass through, while the surrounding grease filter captures fat and smoke particles; together, they form a complete filtration system.

Unlike disposable carbon filters, this one is regenerable. You can regenerate it by heating it in an oven preheated to 200°C for about 45 to 60 minutes, which drives off trapped odours and restores performance. With regular regeneration, the filter can last up to five years, making it a genuinely long-term component rather than a consumable. Even so, it will eventually become permanently saturated and need replacing, and a saturated filter is one of the most common reasons for persistent cooking odours and reduced extraction performance.

The pack of four shown in related items is a cheaper way to buy these filters.

This part will only fit the models as shown or as specifically advised and will not fit any others even if it looks the same, it probably won't be as there are several that look alike yet are not. If you are unsure please don't hesitate to contact us and ask for assistance.

Technical Notes

Specifications: Genuine Electrolux carbon filter for extraction hobs; activated carbon in plastic frame; Helsa cube type; dimensions 104 mm x 104 mm x 50 mm; approximate weight 346 g; supplied as 1 unit; product code 4055380481. Alternate part number: 4055405015.

Note: This filter is regenerable, not disposable. You can thermally regenerate it every 2–3 months in an oven preheated to 200°C for 45–60 minutes; with regular regeneration, it has a maximum lifespan of up to 5 years. Replace a filter that has exceeded this lifespan, or that no longer responds to regeneration.

Safety note: The filter itself has no electrical connections, but the surrounding hob components do. Isolate the hob from the power supply before removing or refitting the filter, and allow the appliance to cool completely. Handle the filter by its frame and avoid damaging the carbon block, as loose carbon dust can be messy and difficult to clear from the appliance.

⚠️ Warning: Customer ordered upon request only. This is a non-returnable item that cannot be cancelled once ordered.

Common Faults & Symptoms

The following symptoms and fault indicators are commonly reported when the carbon filter in an extraction hob becomes saturated or reaches the end of its life. Use this as a diagnostic guide before ordering a replacement — if more than one of these is present, the filter is the likely culprit.

1
Persistent cooking odours in the kitchen
The most obvious sign. Smells that the extraction hob used to clear now linger in the air after cooking, because the saturated carbon can no longer adsorb odour molecules.
2
Filter saturation indicator illuminated
The hob displays a filter icon or LED to show that the carbon filter needs attention. On many models this indicator counts operating hours rather than measuring odour directly, so it will light up even if the filter does not yet smell.
3
Indicator stays on after resetting
If the saturation indicator remains lit or blinks after following the reset procedure, the filter may need to be regenerated or replaced, or the reset procedure may need to be repeated.
4
Reduced extraction airflow
Even on the highest fan setting, the extraction feels weaker than it used to. A clogged carbon filter restricts airflow, which also puts extra strain on the fan motor.
5
Greasy film on kitchen surfaces
A sticky residue builds up on walls, cabinets and worktops near the hob. When the carbon filter is saturated, grease-laden air can bypass effective filtration and settle on surfaces.
6
Unpleasant stale smell from the hob
The hob may start to emit an odour of its own, particularly when first switched on. Trapped grease and organic matter held in a saturated filter can turn stale and become a source of smell rather than a cure for it.
7
Condensation on windows and walls
Moisture from cooking condenses more heavily than before because the hob is moving less air. Poor extraction in recirculation mode is often traced back to a clogged carbon filter.
8
Filter has exceeded its regeneration lifespan
If the filter has been regenerated regularly for close to five years, or if it no longer responds to regeneration, it has reached the end of its life and should be replaced regardless of how it looks.

Fitment Guidance

This carbon filter is compatible only with the AEG and Electrolux models listed in the compatibility matrix above. Even if a filter looks visually similar, the dimensions, frame profile and airflow characteristics can differ between extraction hob ranges.

  • Confirm the full model number against the compatibility list before ordering.
  • Confirm the hob is used in recirculation mode, as carbon filters are not used on ducted installations.
  • Compare the old filter dimensions with the 104 mm x 104 mm x 50 mm figures where the original is still available.
  • If the model is not listed, contact the parts team with the full model and serial number to confirm fitment.

Diagnostic Tips

Before concluding that the carbon filter needs replacing, carry out these checks to rule out other causes.

  • Regenerate the filter first: Before ordering a replacement, try regenerating the existing filter in an oven at 200°C for 45–60 minutes. This often restores performance and can extend the filter's life for several more months.
  • Clean the grease filter: A clogged metal grease filter restricts airflow and causes many of the same symptoms. Clean it thoroughly before blaming the carbon filter.
  • Confirm the operating mode: Carbon filters are only used in recirculation mode. If the hob is ducted to outside, the carbon filter should be removed entirely and the fault lies elsewhere.
  • Reset the saturation indicator: After regenerating or replacing the filter, follow the manufacturer's reset procedure to clear the indicator. If it stays on, the filter may need further attention.

Installation Guide

These steps describe the general procedure. The exact sequence varies between models, so always consult the appliance service manual where available.

  1. Switch off and isolate the extraction hob from the power supply, and allow it to cool completely.
  2. Remove the metal grease filter from the underside of the hob by releasing its retaining clips or catch.
  3. Locate the carbon filter housing behind the grease filter position and unclip or slide out the old filter.
  4. Clean the surrounding area if there is any grease or dust residue, taking care not to disturb the fan or motor.
  5. Fit the new carbon filter in the same orientation as the old one, ensuring the frame engages correctly with the housing.
  6. Refit the metal grease filter and check that it seats securely.
  7. Restore power and reset the filter saturation indicator according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  8. Run the hob on each fan setting to confirm correct operation and airflow.

Before Ordering, Check These First

  • Verify the full model number against the compatibility list.
  • Confirm the hob is operated in recirculation mode.
  • Try regenerating the existing filter before ordering a replacement.
  • Clean the metal grease filter before concluding the carbon filter is at fault.
  • Note that this part is a custom order, has limited availability and is non-returnable.
  • If unsure, contact the parts team with the model and serial number before ordering.

Disclaimer: The fault codes and symptoms listed above are intended as a general guide to assist with diagnosis. They cannot be taken as a definitive diagnosis of any particular problem, and other components may produce similar symptoms. Always confirm the fault with proper testing before ordering parts.

Cooker Hood
Filters

Cooker hood filters come in two main types: grease filters, which prevent grease entering the motor, and carbon/charcoal filters, which remove odours and protect the motor. All hoods require a grease filter, and non-vented hoods should also have a carbon filter fitted. Regular replacement or cleaning is essential for optimal performance.

Filter Replacement Guidelines

  • Grease filters: replace every 1–6 months depending on cooking frequency and type
  • Carbon/charcoal filters: replace every 3–6 months for optimal odour removal
  • Metal mesh grease filters: clean regularly to prevent blockage or damage
  • Replacement frequency depends on cooking habits rather than just manufacturer guidelines

Some cooker hood filters are highly model-specific. Images and sizes are for illustration only. Always check compatibility with your specific model to ensure correct fit and performance.

Important: Do not rely solely on images, as filters can appear identical but be incompatible. Always refer to model specifications and contact us if unsure.
