Description

This is a genuine grill heating element, supplied as the same component fitted at the factory, so it mounts on the original brackets, connects to the existing wiring, and delivers the same heat output the oven was designed around.

The grill element sits at the top of the oven cavity and radiates intense, direct heat downwards onto the food, giving the browning, crisping and toasting that only a proper grill can achieve. It works alongside the thermostat and oven control to reach and hold grilling temperature, and when it fails, the consequences are obvious: food that never browns, a grill that stays completely cold, or a heater that trips the circuit breaker the moment you switch it on.

Choosing genuine means the correct wattage, the correct mounting geometry and a direct plug-in replacement that restores the grill without guesswork.

This element is used across several Bush, Hostess, Kenwood, Montpellier, New World, Rangemaster, Russell Hobbs, Sharp, Statesman and Swan models that share the same oven platform, which is why the same component appears across more than one brand. Because it is manufactured to a specific shape, length, and terminal arrangement, it is not interchangeable with visually similar grill elements from other ranges, so you must confirm the full model number against the compatibility list before ordering.

This grill element will only fit the models shown or as specifically advised and will not fit any others, even if they look the same. If you are unsure, please get in touch with us for assistance.

Technical Notes

Specifications: Genuine grill heating element. Product code: 32041793. Type: top grill element for the oven cavity. Supply: 220–240V AC. Mounting: direct fit to the original brackets inside the top of the cavity—connection: spade terminals to the existing wiring harness. Finish: dark grey sheathed element.

Safety note: Isolate the appliance from the mains supply and allow the oven to cool completely before starting work. Oven interiors and elements retain heat for a considerable time after the appliance is switched off. Wear protective gloves and handle the element only by its mounting bracket; the sheath can be brittle on older elements and may contain mineral powder if cracked. Never test an element by touching it while the appliance is connected to the mains, and never use a damaged element that shows a split, blister or blow-hole, as it may trip the circuit breaker or cause an earth fault. Confirm the replacement matches the original in wattage, voltage, dimensions and terminal position before fitting.

Common Faults & Symptoms

The following symptoms are commonly reported when a grill heating element begins to fail. Use this as a diagnostic guide before ordering a replacement — if more than one of these is present, the element is the likely culprit.

1
GRILL STAYS COMPLETELY COLD
The most common symptom. When the grill is switched on, the element does not glow and no heat is produced at all. The oven may still work normally on other settings, confirming that the fault is specific to the grill element rather than the supply or control board.
2
GRILL ELEMENT GLOWS UNEVENLY OR ONLY IN PATCHES
A grill element that heats only part of its length, or that glows in one section and not another, has suffered an internal failure of the resistance wire. This produces uneven browning and confirms that the element is at the end of its serviceable life.
3
OVEN HEATS INTERMITTENTLY OR ONLY PARTIALLY
In the early stage of failure, the element works on some occasions and not others, or the oven reaches a temperature well below the set value. This happens as the internal resistance wire begins to fracture before it breaks completely, and it is a useful warning that replacement is imminent.
4
VISIBLE SPLIT, BLISTER, BULGE OR BURN MARK ON THE ELEMENT
Physical damage to the element sheath confirms that the internal resistance wire has ruptured or is about to fail. A blown sheath cannot be repaired and must be replaced, even if the element still heats intermittently, because it may trip the circuit breaker or cause an earth fault.
5
CIRCUIT BREAKER OR RCD TRIPS WHEN THE GRILL IS SWITCHED ON
A split or moisture-contaminated sheath allows current to leak to earth, tripping the household circuit breaker or RCD as soon as the grill is switched on. This is a serious symptom, and the element should not be used again until it has been replaced and the circuit tested.
6
FOOD BROWNING VERY SLOWLY OR NOT AT ALL
An element that has lost part of its output produces weak, poorly distributed heat. Food that should brown quickly instead cooks slowly and unevenly, and results become inconsistent between batches.
7
ELEMENT INTERMITTENTLY WORKS
A grill element that heats on some occasions and not others has an internal resistance wire that has begun to fracture. This is an early stage of failure, and the element will eventually go open circuit completely.
8
BURNING SMELL FROM THE REAR OF THE OVEN
Food debris and grease that has baked onto the element or its housing can produce a persistent acrid smell. If the smell continues after cleaning and is accompanied by any of the symptoms above, the element should be tested and replaced as necessary.

Fitment Guidance

This part is compatible only with the models listed in the compatibility matrix above. Even if a part looks visually identical, internal specifications can differ.

  • Confirm your full model number against the Bush, Hostess, Kenwood, Montpellier, New World, Rangemaster, Russell Hobbs, Sharp, Statesman and Swan lists on this page before ordering, as grill elements vary in shape, length and terminal position between ranges that otherwise look similar.
  • Compare the new element against the original for overall dimensions, mounting bracket position and terminal spacing before removing any fixings.
  • Check that the replacement matches the original in wattage and voltage, as fitting an element with the wrong rating will affect grill performance and may overload the thermostat.
  • Inspect the wiring and spade terminals for heat damage or brittleness while the element is out, as damaged connectors can cause a new element to fail prematurely.

Diagnostic Tips

Before concluding that the part has failed, carry out these checks to rule out other causes.

  • MEASURE ELEMENT RESISTANCE: Disconnect the appliance from the mains, access the element terminals and measure resistance with a multimeter. An infinite reading confirms an open circuit and a failed element.
  • CHECK FOR CONTINUITY TO EARTH: With the element disconnected, test between each terminal and the metal sheath. Any continuity indicates an insulation failure that can trip the circuit breaker and means the element must be replaced.
  • INSPECT THE ELEMENT SHEATH: Look for splits, blisters, bulges or dark burn marks. Physical damage cannot be repaired and always requires replacement.
  • VERIFY THE THERMOSTAT AND CONTROL BOARD: A faulty thermostat, thermal cut-out or control relay can prevent power reaching a healthy element. If the element tests correctly for continuity, check these components next.
  • CHECK FOR WIRING DAMAGE: A broken wire or loose spade terminal between the element and the control board can mimic a failed element. Check the harness and connections before ordering a replacement.

Installation Guide

These steps describe the general procedure. The exact sequence varies between models, so always consult the appliance service manual where available.

  1. Isolate the appliance from the mains supply and allow the oven to cool completely before starting work.
  2. Remove the oven door and any shelves or trays to improve access to the top of the cavity, then take off the rear panel or the top cover to expose the grill element connections.
  3. Take a photograph of the element and its wiring before removal, noting which terminal connects to which wire and how the mounting bracket is oriented.
  4. Disconnect the spade terminals from the element, then remove the screws securing the element and its bracket to the top of the cavity.
  5. Lift the old element out carefully, taking care not to damage the surrounding insulation or the cavity walls, and clean any debris or grease from the recess while it is accessible.
  6. Position the new element, refit the mounting screws and reconnect the spade terminals to the corresponding tags. Check that the element sits correctly and does not touch the cavity walls.
  7. Refit the rear panel and oven door, restore the power and run the oven through a short heating cycle to confirm that the element heats correctly and that no error codes or tripped breakers occur.

Before Ordering, Check These First

  • Locate the model number on the rating plate, usually found around the oven door frame or on the rear of the appliance.
  • Match the full model number, including any suffix letters and numbers, against the compatibility lists above.
  • Confirm whether you need the grill element, the fan element or the lower bake element, as these are different parts.
  • Check the thermostat, control board and wiring harness for faults, as these can mimic a failed heating element.
  • Verify your full model number with our team if anything is unclear — a quick check avoids an unnecessary return.

Disclaimer: The fault codes and symptoms listed above are intended as a general guide to assist with diagnosis. They cannot be taken as a definitive diagnosis of any particular problem, and other components may produce similar symptoms. Always confirm the fault with proper testing before ordering parts.

Grill Heating Elements Oven & Cooker Spares

Grill
Heating Elements

Cooker and oven grill elements can warp, split, or fail over time. Most come in single, double, or split designs, with some outer elements doubling as oven elements. Quality varies—cheap elements fail faster and may be harder to fit.

Replacing Grill Elements

Most grill elements can be replaced from the front of the oven, but always isolate the appliance from mains power for safety. Warped or split elements often indicate failure without needing electrical testing. Cheap elements may be poorly constructed and harder to fit.

Outer elements on dual grills may act as oven elements and usually do not glow red, whereas inner infra-red elements typically do.

Care & Maintenance

To maximise the lifespan of your new lower oven heating element:

  • Keep the oven clean — built-up grease and food residue can cause hotspots and premature element failure

  • Avoid placing items too close to the element — this can allow grease to splatter onto and damage the element

  • Use oven liners with caution — some liners can trap heat and cause the element to overheat

  • Don't use abrasive cleaners on the element surface

  • Check the element periodically for signs of damage or wear

Can't Find The Grill Element You Need?

Lower oven heating elements vary significantly by model, wattage, dimensions, and fixing points. Visual identification alone is rarely enough — using your oven or cooker model number is critical to avoid ordering the wrong element.
